SAMANTHA MIYANDA
“Inequality inspired me to get into sport leadership, so that many other young girls would not experience what I did.” - Samantha Miyanda
DIANA CHIKOTESHA
“Women athletes often have shorter careers, so it's important to prepare for the future. I value education because it lasts, even if injuries or age limit my athletic career. As I always say: 'Champions aren’t defined by wins, but by how they recover when they fall.'” - Diana Chikotesha
PERIS MUKOKO-WANYAGA
“Coming from a background where women in rugby were largely underrepresented, I’ve made it my mission to break down barriers and create pathways for more women to thrive—not just as players, but as referees, coaches, and leaders.” - Peris Mukoko-Wanyaga
GRETA DÖNNECKE
“No matter where you start, you can grow into a leader who shapes the future of sport. Through my experiences working at both small community events and global championships, I’ve learned that every opportunity, no matter the scale, is valuable and contributes to shaping your path. Every step of my journey has been fuelled by a love of sport and a belief in the power of teamwork.” - Greta Dönnecke
ADAMA JARJU
"I started Yakarr Football Academy because I wanted to play football on my birthday, but there were no tournaments for women and girls where I live. Now we run a women’ and girls’ tournament every year and I run weekly sessions for girls in my community.” - Adama Jarju
IRENE MUTINDA
“One of the most impactful moments for me was being the team leader and guiding my teammates through multiple victories. Seeing the joy and pride on their faces after each achievement reinforced my belief in the power of teamwork and leadership.” - Irene Mutindi Mutinda
JANET MOTAH
“My message is one of advocacy for equal opportunities in sports, where every individual, regardless of gender or background, can thrive and succeed. I hope to leave behind a legacy that inspires future generations to pursue their dreams in sports, to challenge stereotypes, and to contribute to a more equitable and compassionate world through athletic achievement and solidarity.” - Janet Motah
THUBAELIHLE SIBANDA
"I’m passing a message that women do belong on the sports field and in any field that they choose, and that sometimes it might not seem like people like us do not exist, but when you search hard enough you will find someone that can inspire you to push towards your goals and to be part of the change makers too.” - Thubaelihle Sibanda
THE STORY OF #HERSTORY
#Herstory is a digital campaign that was created in the lead-up to our Changing the Narrative in Sport Summit in May 2024 in Lausanne. This event focused on “Harnessing the Power of Storytelling for Women’s Sports”. We explored how athletes are portrayed in the media, strategies to enhance their exposure, the role of digital transformation, and ways to overcome bias.
As part of this event, we decided to share the stories of women working in sport. Our goal is to challenge stereotypes, increase representation, and celebrate the achievements of women in sport worldwide. So to do this, we issued a call for nominations on our channels, inviting people to nominate inspirational women in sport in Switzerland. Within 36 hours, we received over 80 nominations, so we knew we were on to something! People want to hear from women in sport. From March to May, we received 152 nominations and shared the stories of 26 women.
To further amplify these women's stories, we organised an exhibition at our Changing the Narrative event, and the feedback was so great that we got another idea... We decided to take #HerStory global! Following the event, and with the help of the England football legend, Jill Scott, we opened up #HerStory to international nominations. So far we have received nominations for 300+ women across 35+ countries. We are committed to reaching out to each of these women working in sport to see if they would like to share their story and perspectives.
We love hearing from these women and learning about their journeys. If you know any inspirational women working in sport, please nominate them using the button below. Thank you for being a Game-Changer!
