SPORT IS FOR EVERYONE
“There were times I had to pretend to be a boy. I knew there was a law, that we had a President who said girls shouldn’t be playing soccer. I ignored it. Soccer is a game for everyone. It doesn't matter what gender, there is a place for you.”
1999 FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP
“The 1999 Women’s World Cup was a turning point, both for women’s soccer and for me personally. It was the first time there was recognition and respect for me and other women in the game. It created opportunities for a lot of women and myself to continue my playing career and coaching.
Storytelling and representation in the media are crucial for promoting diversity and inclusion. By featuring individuals, fans can relate more deeply, making it personal. Hearing about the experiences and obstacles these all-star athletes have overcome makes them feel more 'human.' Keep sharing these incredible stories!"
BARRIERS TO WOMEN IN SPORT
“There are a lot of barriers that hinder women in sports. Things have improved since I was a player, but we still have more to do. In Brazil, we are still struggling to have equal opportunities to men. The pay gap, lack of structured competitions, and limited visibility for women’s soccer are real challenges. In general, the people in charge need to implement a higher standard and believe in the women's federation having its own identity. The women have been looking for acceptance.”
“Don't give up! Sport is a tool for your personal growth. You learn teamwork, work ethic, discipline and perseverance.”
SISSI’S STORY IS MORE THAN HER ON THE FOOTBALL PITCH
“One experience that changed my perspective happened with an 11-year-old boy. He had cancer and was being bullied at school. I went to his school and built a relationship with him. That was when I realised that my story here was more than what I do on the soccer field, but also off the field. My relationship with him significantly impacted my life and I realised that I want to help others, be kind and not get caught up in my insignificant issues.”
Thank you, Sissi do Amor, for sharing your inspiring story and your continued commitment and contribution to football.
