THE POWER OF SPORT

“The turning point that influenced my perspective on sport for people with disabilities was witnessing the transformative power of sport in their lives. I saw firsthand how access to sports and physical activity programs could profoundly improve not only physical abilities but also confidence, independence, and overall well-being.

For some, this journey led them to become athletes, competing at high levels, while for others, the impact was simply the joy and empowerment of participating. Beyond the personal benefits, sports also create a sense of community—one that breaks down barriers and raises awareness within the broader population, fostering greater understanding and inclusion.”

BARRIERS TO INCLUSION IN SPORT

“Systemic barriers in sports include limited access to infrastructure, inadequate resources, and societal stereotypes that undervalue athletes with disabilities. Additionally, there is a significant lack of trained professionals in sports and disability, as the focus often shifts towards therapy rather than sport. To dismantle these barriers, we must invest in accessibility, provide specialiSed education, and ensure equal representation in leadership to value all athletes equally.

One memorable experience I had was during a boccia activity where we invited people without disabilities to try the sport. They quickly realised how challenging it was to achieve the technical precision that athletes with disabilities had mastered. This experience not only highlighted the immense skill and dedication required but also shifted perceptions—what many initially saw as therapy was, in fact, a high-performance sport. It was a powerful moment that underscored the respect and recognition these athletes deserve.”

EMBRACE YOUR ABILITIES

“My advice to young women with disabilities aspiring to work in the sports industry is to embrace their abilities and use their voices to drive change. Sport is a powerful tool for empowerment and inclusion, and your experiences and perspectives are invaluable in shaping a more equitable future. Surround yourself with supportive allies, seek out opportunities to grow, and never underestimate the impact you can have—not only for yourself but for the generations of women who will follow in your footsteps.”

SHIFTING PERSPECTIVES

“The story I aim to tell with my journey in the sports industry is that sport for people with disabilities is, first and foremost, sport. While there is an undeniable social aspect due to societal circumstances, once athletes enter the world of sport, they should be seen and valued as athletes.

My message is that we must stop labeling it differently and start recognising it simply as sport for people with disabilities. This shift in perspective is crucial to breaking down barriers and ensuring that athletes with disabilities receive the same recognition, respect, and opportunities as any other athlete in the industry.”
