SWETHA SUBBIAH
“Storytelling opens the mind to worlds that are sometimes unseen or unacknowledged, and this has the power to initiate meaningful change.”
Meet Swetha Subbiah, the co-founder of Sisters in Sweat, India’s largest sport and wellness community for women. She is also a personal trainer, performance coach, and one of only four Nike-certified instructors in India.
CELEBRATING DIVERSITY THROUGH SPORT
“Sisters in Sweat brings together a diverse group of women with varying skill levels, physical fitness levels, careers, and age groups. Despite these differences, the shared experience of womanhood unites them. To me, this is a great example of where diversity is celebrated.”
THE SPORTS INDUSTRY IN INDIA
“In India there are cultural, social and economic barriers that inhibit participation in sport. A lot of these barriers are disproportionately experienced by women.
While it takes a lot of effort and time to influence culture, steps to dismantle these barriers could include the government providing better infrastructure, creating safe spaces, and investing in the overall sports ecosystem to help towards the growth and development of the industry.”
OPPORTUNITIES IN SPORT
“Unlike many other established professions that have a clear career path, the Sport industry in India is still a very nascent industry and the career path might seem unclear. The silver lining to this challenge is that this means that the opportunities are immense. More importantly, it might call upon you to chart out the path for future generations - a prospect that is both exciting and empowering.”
SWETHA’S JOURNEY IN SPORT
“Through my journey, I have witnessed a significant change in attitudes toward sport, particularly among women. Today, there are far more opportunities, greater participation, and increased encouragement than ever before - and it only seems to be improving! My personal journey is testimony to that change.”
