MEGAN REUTER

“It’s crucial to spend time learning about yourself outside of athletics. Most importantly, remember that you are more than your sport.”

Meet, Megan, founder of The Rooted Athlete, a platform to empower all athletes as they transition away from sports. She spent most of her days in the pool from the age of 3 through 22, and went on to swim at FAU. Through The Rooted Athlete podcast, workshops and local events, they support current and former athletes through their transition to life after sports.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COACHES

“Coaches and team leaders play a critical role. Many athletes follow the lead of their leaders. I have heard many stories where coaches have done more harm than good, and I think coaches need support just as much as athletes do. It’s crucial to learn how to communicate with each athlete and empathise with their emotions.”

YOU ARE MORE THAN YOUR SPORT

"Effort is more important than performance. Remember, you are a human first and an athlete second. Take time to reflect on your experiences and emotions. Never feel ashamed to ask for help. Treat yourself with the same compassion you show your teammates.

I want athletes (current and former) to know that sports have set them up for so much success. There are many mindsets that serve us outside of sport and some that may need to be re-framed. It's crucial to spend time learning about yourself outside of athletics. Most importantly, you are MORE than your sport.”

ATHLETES NEED WOMEN IN SPORT

"Athletes need women working in sports! Remember, we as women bring a unique perspective to every situation, especially in sports."

AN INSPIRING SPORTING EXPERIENCE

"Attending the 2016 Olympics in Rio and witnessing firsthand the dedication of athletes who put everything on the line for their sport was nothing short of amazing. Now, recognising the parallels between sports and life has opened my eyes to see the human beyond the athlete."
