KATELYNN SLADE

“I hope the message of believing I belong in leadership positions resonates with other women and they can believe they belong too.”

Meet Katelynn Slade, a post-doctoral researcher at Loughborough University, where she completed her PhD in Sport Psychology. She is also a volleyball coach for Loughborough University, Volleyball England and Club Storm.

"I started playing sports at a very young age—I come from a very sporty and active family. I grew up playing soccer, basketball, volleyball, running track, and barrel racing. From there, I played NJCAA and NCAA volleyball before pursuing my postgraduate degrees in the UK.

My mom was an absolute star as a distance runner and has always been an advocate for women in sport. From a young age, she gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams and never back down from a challenge. She instilled in me the importance of women supporting women.

Coaching volleyball has had a hugely positive impact on my relationship with sport.

When I finished playing, I absolutely hated it and wanted nothing to do with it. But since becoming a coach, I have been able to fall in love with the sport again and rebuild a healthier relationship with myself in sport."

"The Female Coaches Leadership Programme at Loughborough University, led by Mark Jarram and Natalia Marshall, is an example of meaningful action. It’s easy to say, ‘Let’s get more women coaching and in leadership positions,’ but actually doing the work and creating opportunities is another thing entirely.

Mark, Nat, and Loughborough are not just talking about change—they are actively supporting women in coaching and providing them with the tools to become leaders in sport. It’s also great to see not just women supporting women, but also men like Mark advocating, leading, and pushing for change.”

"I am very proud of my journey as an athlete, but I think I am now becoming even more proud of my journey as a coach. My story reflects bravery, resilience, and ultimately the belief that I belong in leadership positions. I hope this message resonates with other women and helps them believe they belong too."

“Put yourself forward for leadership positions, don't be afraid to raise your hand and speak, and to always make space for others.”
