Meet Jelena Cankovic, a professional football player living out her dream. She plays for Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club and the Serbian National Team. Jelena is passionate about staying in the game for as long as possible and is already preparing for life after football through Visa’s The Second Half program, which supports athletes in their transition beyond sport.
“My journey in sports began with football when I was just a kid. It quickly became more than just a hobby.
From a young age, my family supported me in every way. Playing football felt natural, and my goal was to be able to play it professionally. Their support and sacrifices gave me confidence to pursue my dream.
Now, I am a professional football player for Brighton & Hove Albion FC and the Serbian National Team. ”
MENTAL HEALTH IN SPORT
“In the last couple of years there have been more athletes from multiple sports that talk publicly about the importance of mental health which has helped a lot. People talk about importance of it, athletes and coaches are getting more educated about it and it defenitelly makes sports a better place to be in.
Coaches and team leaders play a key role in athlete’s mental well-being. They help athletes set realistic expectations and remind them to take care of themselves beyond the game. Providing a safe space or person for athletes to open up to is absolutely essential. Having someone who listens without judgment can make a big difference. A good leader understands that by creating a culture that prioritises respect, understanding, and belonging, athletes feel more supported—which helps them perform at their best.
My advice to young athletes is to prioritise their mental health. It’s just as important as physical training. Take time to work on yourself and develop strategies to manage stress, pressure, and setbacks. Finding what works for you is key.
Don’t be afraid to speak up when you need help. Asking for support doesn’t make you weak—it makes you strong”
