YAIMA PAYNE
“I want to send a strong message about the importance of women's leadership in sport: being a positive role model, believing in yourself, and knowing that a powerful woman can empower others."
Meet Yaima, an award-winning high-performance wrestling coach based in Barbados, who is deeply passionate about her sport. She is dedicated to inspiring girls and women and breaking barriers to help them move forward.
BREAKING CULTURAL BARRIERS IN SPORT
“An important moment in my career was when my country won its first medal at the Pan-Am Games in wrestling. I was then named Coach of the Year.
On the day I opened a Muslim wrestling club, I felt so proud to break cultural barriers for the girls and women who wanted to learn Olympic wrestling. I believe that Muslim women should be allowed to participate in sports. They have so much potential for sport in general, but because of cultural barriers, they are not allowed to participate.”
