SOPHIE JONES
"As women in the sports industry, our innovation and power can drive meaningful change and make the industry better."
Meet Sophie Jones, a marine biologist who loves anything that gets her moving. Growing up training for national swimming in France, her passion for sport and pushing boundaries was born from hours in the pool. Now she has learnt that sport is so much more. It’s a form of connection, excitement, learning, adrenalin and a way to connect with nature. From surfing, hiking, climbing to skiing, swimming and cycling, Sophie believes sport is crucial for both individual and societies well-being.
SOPHIE’S MESSAGE ON SPORT
“I would like to leave a positive environmental and social impact. Sports can be used to empower change as well as drive a shift in the way we think about and use nature. I would love for sports events and industries to move towards not only reducing their impact, but driving sustainable change. Whether this be in climate change, biodiversity or empowering more women to participate.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY IN SPORT
“A memorable sporting moment for me was a group cycle through the Swiss Jura, where we all pushed through the challenge together, ending with a shared bowl of pasta as we watched the sunset from our bikes. This moment taught me that sport is not only about training and performance, but above all its connection and shared experience. The people you share these moments with are what make them meaningful and keep you motivated.”
“My swimming coach Loïc Gat played a pivotal role in my sports career. He trained me for over 10 years, he pushed me to my limits, taught me never to give up and that I am stronger and faster than I think.”
THE ROLE OF SPORTS IN SUSTAINABILITY
“Sports organisations should lead by example, advocating for environmental sustainability and setting new standards.
For instance, the World Surf League’s 'One Ocean' campaign takes a holistic approach to climate change and plastic pollution. Through partnerships and awareness initiatives, they drive action and promote sustainability beyond their events and industry.
I believe that eliminating plastic should become the norm. We need systemic changes in how sports events and equipment are organised, emphasising reusable options over constant consumption of new gear."
THE INDUSTRY NEEDS STRONG WOMEN
“Don’t let the fact that men still dominate many sports deter you. Often, I’m the only woman at a surf spot, one of the few in the backcountry, or on group rides. The sports industry needs strong women willing to challenge traditional perceptions of women in sport.”
