ALYSSA LAGONIA

“Through storytelling, the media takes an active role in normalising the presence of women in sports, paving the way for young girls to find inspiring role models to emulate.”

Meet Alyssa Lagonia, a former professional football player and current Women’s Football Development Assistant for UEFA. She is fulfilling her dream of working in women's football and contributing to its development for the next generation throughout Europe.

FIFA WORLD CUP 1999

“When I was a young girl, I was desperate for female role models. It was rare as a kid to be exposed to female athletes on television and in the media. But one summer in 1999, the FIFA Women’s World Cup changed all that for me.”

A LIFE’S PURSUIT

“I saw women playing football on television. I knew who the players were. I collected all the memorabilia and during the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final, a decision crystallised within me: I wanted to make playing football my life's pursuit.”

FAMILY & FOOTBALL

“My family has played a pivotal role in my journey in sport. My parents were dedicated to giving me the best football experience possible. However, it was my father who embedded the joy and passion I have today. As my coach, growing up he always made football fun. Whether it was on or off the pitch, I always looked forward to playing.“

THE ROLE OF STORYTELLING

“Storytelling provides an opportunity to shift the narrative around women in sports and create diverse and positive stories. Further awareness can contribute to a more informed audience that questions and challenges existing stereotypes.”
