INCLUSION IN SPORT

“When I visit schools with athletes with disabilities to teach and practice with children aged 10 to 14, the empathy the children show and how they explain to their elders that everyone can participate in sports is truly inspiring. The feedback we receive is so positive that, year after year, schools invite us back to continue these sessions. The biggest challenge is teaching from an early age that we are all equal, regardless of our abilities.”

DISMANTLING BARRIERS TO INCLUSION

“We need to hold organisations accountable for failing to meet diversity and inclusion goals. Investment in adaptive facilities and equipment is important, along with the implementation of universal design principles in sports infrastructure. Enforcing anti-discrimination and inclusion policies at all levels of sports organisations, coupled with introducing incentives for those that achieve diversity benchmarks, can drive meaningful change. Diversity and inclusion training for coaches, referees, and administrators should be prioritised, while inclusive practices must be incorporated into coaching certifications. Additionally, promoting grassroots initiatives that introduce underrepresented groups to sports can foster inclusivity and provide opportunities for broader participation.”

REPRESENTATION IN SPORT

“Storytelling and representation in media are powerful tools for promoting diversity and inclusion in sports. They shape public perceptions, challenge stereotypes, and inspire individuals from all walks of life to participate in and support sports.

We can use digital platforms to amplify diverse stories and create inclusive narratives. However, it is important to avoid framing these narratives solely through the lens of overcoming adversity; instead, we should highlight talent, strategy, and achievements. Consistent representation is essential—not just occasional features during special events like the Paralympics or Women’s World Cup. Broadcasting para-sports events on mainstream channels is crucial to normalising their visibility.”
