JULIA FERREIRA GOMES

“Follow your interests within the industry - whether in management, coaching, or community development. Your passion will drive both your success and impact.”

Meet Julia Ferreira Gomes, a doctoral candidate with over four years of research experience focused on the utility of trauma- and violence-informed practices within the sport for development field. She is passionate about helping make sport for development organisations gender equitable and trauma-informed so that all people can participate and benefit from engaging in these programs, regardless of their identity or past experiences with trauma or violence.

DEVELOPING INCLUSIVE SPORT PROGRAMS

“We need to develop inclusive sports programs that specifically cater to the needs of non-binary and gender-diverse individuals. This includes creating environments that provide gender-neutral restrooms and facilities, ensuring that everyone feels safe and welcome. Additionally, fostering community partnerships can enhance diversity and inclusion initiatives at the grassroots level, making sports more accessible to all. Finally, establishing accountability systems will ensure that organisations uphold their commitments to diversity and inclusion, actively dismantling the barriers that hinder participation for all.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF INCLUSION IN COACHING

“Having coaches who represent the communities they work with significantly impacts those communities. When coaches share similar backgrounds or experiences as the participants, it fosters trust and relatability, creating a supportive environment where individuals feel understood and valued. I’ve seen how coaches from local communities not only bring relevant skills and knowledge but also serve as inspiring role models. This representation helps break down barriers and encourages participation, ultimately making a positive impact in the lives of community members.”
